If videogames have taught us anything, it's that schoolgirls don't just kick ass, they gather it, collect it, and file it away for use in later battles in an elaborate cataloging system that would put a train-spotting stamp collector to shame. The Monster Trainer is no exception; in fact, she is the exception that created the rule. Rule #452 to be exact.

Power
[Evil Dark Wizard] The Monster Trainer can summon an Evil Dark Wizard to blast blocks and burn heroes anywhere on the map.
Phil Saunders is a freelance artist and designer with successful career in games, including The Journeyman Project series and Myst III, regarded by some as the most beautiful game ever made. Recently he has contributed designs for the movies Zathura, Spiderman 3 and Iron Man.

"The Monster Trainer character was inspired by the teenage girls I saw hanging around the Harajuku district on my last trip to Tokyo," he says. "Goth Lolitas, blonde, hyper-tanned Ganguro girls, uniformed schoolgirls with oversized platforms and legwarmers, they seemed to represent the kind of obsession that's characteristic of the uniquely Japanese 'monster breeder' style game."

And while he may be deeply involved in film now, he remains a gamer at heart. "I built my first computer when I was 13, and just devoured every game I could get my hands on."
The Arena of Shame is where Monster Trainer schools her creatures in bloody, Darwinian battles. The stadium is adorned with an angry scowl, expressing disapproval at any creature that fails in combat.
